Savannah: Shooter Downtown

Before heading back to Athens, we went downtown one more time to check out the Jepson Center Art Museum and to tour an historic home. Driving into the city we noticed a few streets blocked off by the police. I honestly didn't think anything of it, I thought maybe they were shooting a movie. Well it turns out there was a man with a gun holed up in a restaurant. A live shooter. We were completely safe the entire time but it meant all the museums were closed until the stand off was over. We waited for about an hour, walking the streets south of the shooter and finally were allowed to go into the Jepson.
Steve and I both really love art and we don't get a lot of it in Athens so I thought it would be cool to squeeze a cultural experience into our trip. They had a fun area for kids too. Henry liked drawing on the "kids art wall" glass over fun shapes. There were dry erase markers for him to use.
They also had this cool magnetic board where you could build a sculpture, Henry wasn't too into it.
The museum was exhibiting a few artists who use technology to create art. One had patrons stand on a white mat and it turned you into a painterly picture. Above is Henry and I.
Another artist was examining the video game as art. Steve and I both thought her ideas needed some more work and organization.

The coolest exhibit showcased Leo Villareal who creates art out of strobe lights, plexi glass and wood. The lights were constantly changing but there was a hypnotizing pattern to it. Pretty cool. Henry liked that room especially since it was dark and the lights were everywhere.

After the museum we headed home without seeing the historic house. The shooter had really messed up our schedule. But that's okay because we were all tired and ready to get home.

Four hours later we made it home without incident. Henry actually slept for most of the ride home too.

Walking into the kitchen, Steve noticed that the freezer was open. Great. So we spent the next hour cleaning out the thawing chicken juice and throwing away bags of open vegetables and 8 frozen pizza dough balls. We salvaged what we could, at the least everything was still cold, just thawed. We also had a can of diet coke freeze and explode in the fridge so we had to clean that out as well. Welcome home!
