Rate My Professor

Steve let it slip that he found himself on RateMyProfessor.com and that he has 5 out of 5. Good Job, Steven!!

Overall he is really liking UGA. He is getting used to his new schedule mostly evening classes and his new students. Unlike BYU, he only has to teach 3 times a week instead of 5 and his classes are only once a week but for 3 hours. And he has no classes on Tuesday which is great so we can sleep in and hang out all day.

Dining Room

The Dining Room was pretty much just a blank shell (okay the whole apartment was pretty much blank). Since we finally have somewhere else to store our bikes, I was excited to have just a table and chairs in the room. Maybe we'll eat dinner at the table now. Except, who carpets a dining room? No one who has kids. And the chandelier is ridiculously ugly so I am looking for a replacement.

I used leftover paint from our old apartment (lighter grey: KILZ Sensual Silver and darker grey: KILZ porpoise grey) The white is what the wall was when we moved in and I created the faux molding look with painter's tape and some careful measuring using a cookie sheet. And a note on the tape: to get crisp lines, go over the tape with an old library card/credit card before painting to make sure it is really sealed.

Plates: Thrifted
Table and Chairs: Thrifted and revamped
Brooklyn Poster: ORK
Paintings: Me
Bowl: Mikasa -and yes, it is full of Georgia peaches which will be made into a pie today.

More of the apartment to come.

Before and After: Side Tables

Before we moved I sold off our yard sale side tables thinking that they would be easy to replace once we got to Georgia. Overall I have been disappointed in the thrift store situation here. We were so spoiled with DI and Savers that the sad little Goodwill seems pretty pathetic. There are some smaller stores scattered through Athens but I haven't been too impressed.
Anyway I found these matching side tables the other day and for $6 each I thought they could work. Totally MDF and what Steve thinks looks like someone's shop project. They are actually three pieces that come apart to lay flat. I like how tall they are to work with the couch.

So I took them apart, fit them easily into the trunk and brought them home. After 3 coats of white paint and 2 coats of glossy polyurethane, I am pleased. Total cost: less than $20. Next, reupholster that hideous chair.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

Steve and I have befriended three families who agreed to do a babysitting coop thing. In fact, it wasn't even my idea although it is brilliant. We take turns watching each other's kids so we can go on real dates. So you trade one evening of watching 6 kids aged 4 and under for 3 dates.

Friday night we went out and it was so nice not having Henry to lug around with us. (Just kidding we love him lots.) We ate calzones and sandwiches at Johnny's Pizza which was very yummy. And then we saw Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. The effects were really cool and I was laughing out loud for the bulk of the film. Also surprising, Kieran Culkin as the unexpectedly funny and brilliant gay roommate. Whoever thought sharing a bed with one of the Culkin's could look so appealing? And if you owned a nintendo in the 1980's you'll appreciate most of the humor.

The best part? Just being alone with Steve.
The second best part? Walking out of the theater at 9:30 and feeling an ever so slight chill in the air. Bring on Fall, pretty please...

Winterville Park

Every Wednesday a group of girls from my ward meet at Winterville Park in the morning to enjoy being outside before the heat sets in. We went this week and not only was it nice to be outside but now that Henry can sit, he loved the swings. All pictures taken in motion.

Next time we're trying the slide.

Pottery Barn Alphabet Toy

Also at the consignment sale I was able to score lots of books for a quarter each and some toys for Henry. Plus some cute name brand clothes at really good prices. The find of the day: this Pottery Barn alphabet block toy. I dug it out from under some other random gym things. All the letters are there, its solid wood with minimal wear and guess how much it cost? $2.50. Score.Henry already loves spinning the pieces and pulling it over on himself. Cant wait until February for the next sale.

UGA: The Bulldogs

One of the first things I noticed in Athens was how crazy people are here about the school. Literally, red, black and bulldogs are everywhere. And I mean everywhere, Victoria's Secret even has a line of Lady Bulldogs loungewear. Could you ever imagine such a thing in Provo?
Businesses even have dawgs out front decked out to match the property. This one is one of my favorites, he's a banker bulldog.
Bring on the Bull Dog Spirit! More funny dawgs to come.

Henry's Tie

Last Saturday I went with some girls from my ward to a kid consignment sale. Steve was kind enough to watch Henry for 7 hours while we were gone. Not only was it fun being out of the apartment and shopping at 50% off everything but it was fun to be with other women my age! Yeah for making friends.
I found this sweet tie for $1 and couldn't pass it up. Henry even tolerated it throughout all of church. Look how stylish he looks. Thanks Steve for snapping these pictures while I was napping.

Colorado to Georgia

So I didn't take any pictures on our road trip. The camera bag got packed into the trunk and I didn't stress it. We pushed through only stopping for gas and to feed Henry. Each night we stayed with family or friends and had a good time visiting.

And that picture of us by the Welcome to Georgia sign didn't happen either as there was a car being towed right on the state line and I couldn't swerve to get to the shoulder fast enough. Oh well.

Things of note on my first cross country drive:
We drove through the Red Mountains in Ouray, CO and it was gorgeous. The kind of scary mountain ride with inches of shoulder between you and cliffs and breathtaking views you're too scared to enjoy. I highly recommend driving through this route, although not with a U-Haul.

Once you hit Oklahoma you are in the Bible Belt and I have never seen so many bill boards for Jesus before. Also there was a great 50 foot ten commandments. And even in the middle of no where you could find a radio station with someone reading Bible verses or country music.

Harry Potter: And the Deathly Hallows helped us get all the way into Alabama. Having a lengthy book on tape made the trip a little more enjoyable.

We packed a cooler full of deli meats and stopped for picnic lunches along the way. This got us out of the car for 15 minutes and Henry out of his car seat for some much needed roll around time.

We have been in Georgia for two weeks now and so far it is great. We're over the culture shock and ready to get to living life. More on the apartment and pictures soon. I wanted to have everything unpacked and organized by today but it looks like I am going to need the weekend to finish.

Henry: 8 months

Where does time fly?

Henry at 8 months is a lot of fun. He is active, always in motion whether it be just his arms and legs or his mouth. He is a great baby 95% of the time and that other 5% he just wants to be held. He loves to play on the floor and roam free. His favorite toys are anything that is not a toy especially cords and plastic bags.

He'll eat anything but green beans and is getting the hang of finger foods. He loves peaches, zucchini and juice.

Overall he has been a joy in our lives and we count ourselves very lucky to have him in our family.

Sitting

The first day in Georgia Henry sat by himself for the first time and now he is working on perfecting his army crawl. My life is about to get very interesting. Better finish unpacking and painting soon. Three rooms down, two to go.

From Utah to Washington

Okay so we finally have internet at home and new phones. Nothing makes you feel more helpless than having no connection to the outside world. Can we say our new apartment is a t-mobile dead zone? How did we live without all this technology? But now we're all set up. No more internet dates to McDonald's or sitting on campus in a parking lot clinging to cell phone coverage.

So back to the move.

We finished packing up, sent our truck off to Georgia and headed up to Washington via airplane for a family visit, vacation and friend's wedding.

All my brother's were in town and we got this family shot. Everyone just loved Henry. At first the boys were a little apprehensive around him but by the end of the weekend Henry had won them over.My parents watched Henry so Steve and I could go to Lexi's sealing at the Seattle temple. It was fun to revisit where we got married and the ceremony was even held in the same room. Lexi was a beautiful bride and it was good to see old friends again.
The reception was held in this lovely outdoor setting under a big white tent full of lanterns and colorful indian accents.
And then after a fleeting weekend, we were on our way. We flew to SLC Sunday morning and then drove directly out to Colorado.

Last night I saw a cockroach...

and I freaked out.

My first thought was, "Seriously, we've been here for less than 24 hours." Which isn't even correct, we had been there for about 48 hours. It came from behind the washing machine, up the wall, it was reddish black and in my memory bigger than it probably was.

I had about 4 boxes of kitchen stuff left to wash and put away and I was feeling really good about the progress we were making. I wanted to finish the kitchen last night, have at least one room done. 11:50 pm. I screamed for Steve and he went to kill it with a paper towel but we couldn't tell if it died or just dropped back behind the washing machine. That was it, I was done for the night.

I got into bed but I couldn't shake the heebie jeebies. I just knew that I was going to have nightmares about them. All over the apartment, taking over, covering the floor, being on me or worse, Henry. I lay in bed and I could feel them on me. Ridiculous, I know. When we chose Georgia, I knew there would be bugs. I knew they would be in the house but this was sooner than I had expected.

At 5:30 am Henry woke up. I lay in bed hearing him whimper. I thought maybe if I lay there long enough he will fall back asleep. I didn't want to get up. Why was I so against it? Not because I was tired but because I just knew there would be more cockroaches out there. I dreaded turning on the hall light and seeing them scamper across the floor heading for safety. What if there was one in his crib? As I lay there thinking up all this nonsense, Henry's cries became more persistent. I had to do it. I had to feed him. I gave myself my usual pep talk. "You are a strong, confident woman. You are 27 years old. You have a college degree. Why are you afraid of something 1000 times smaller than you?"

I got up, walked through the living room, turned on the light, picked him up and feed him in the comfort of our glider. He feel peacefully back to sleep and I got back into bed.

Guess how many cockroaches I saw while I was up?

None.

But this morning there was a wasp in our kitchen. Welcome to Georgia!

UT, CO, NM, TX, OK, AR, TN, MS, AL

I write this from a hotel just outside Birmingham. I won't let you know which one because in case I have any stalkers, I don't want them showing up at our room.

We have made it through many states and tomorrow will sail into Athens. So far I have been pleasantly surprised with our cross country trip. Henry has been pretty good except for a couple of very needy moments including right now when all we want to do is sleep and he wants to party. I secretly think he is trying to get back at us for keeping him locked up in a car seat for the past 4 days.

Also sorry, I thought I had scheduled some posts but I guess I never actually posted them. Well to make up for it I will have lots of posts soon about our vacation and the drive and of course the new places and our new state and yes, I am going to stop by the "Welcome to Georgia!" sign on the interstate and make Steve take a picture. Those are the pictures you just don't regret taking.

okay bye.
