The Details

So here is Henry's birth story. If you don't like honesty in blood and hospitals then feel free to scroll down and merely look at the pictures (not pictures of the birth but of Henry)

A little background:(Henry yawning, not screaming. I love the action shot)

Week 35: We decided to change doctors. I know it was kind of late in the game but I really felt strongly about finding a doctor who would be more compliant with our birth plan. I had decided that I wanted to birth naturally and Steve and I had taken hypnobirthing classes in preparation. In short, hypnobirthing uses relaxation to work with the body and baby in labor. I won't go into it here but if you want more info just leave me a comment. I had taken my birth plan to my original doctor and hadn't gotten the reaction I wanted. So we went to someone else.
I loved our new doctor, Dr. Berry and we both felt really good about him. He didn't think our birth plan was unreasonable and was totally willing to work with us.
Then, literally the first appointment I have with him, I have high blood pressure. I have never had high blood pressure before in pregnancy or not.(After his second bath at home, he hates baths.)

He had me come back to his office the next day to check again. My pressure was still high and he sent me to the hospital to be monitored. The hospital. I had never been to the hospital before.
At this point I am at risk for toxemia which means bed rest and more trips to the hospital.

Week 37:
They tell us that they are not going to let me carry past 38 weeks since the baby will be fully developed having reached full term at 37 weeks. I mentally prepare myself to have the baby as I am going to be induced on Monday December 21. Meanwhile I'm working and relaxing from home on bed rest which is the hardest part for me. Literally I can only get up to go to the bathroom and shower. During this time I don't even set foot in the kitchen and Steve being the wonderful man that he is takes care of me and helps do the finishing touches for the baby.

Week 38:
Thursday before induction, I have a doctor's appointment and they get protein in my urine test which means my kidneys are possibly failing so they send me to the hospital to be induced. Steve and I stop at Subway to get dinner since they will not feed you once you set foot inside. Steve and I check into the hospital and get settled in our room. They hook me up to a monitor and check my progress. So far I am already dilated to a 3 and am about 80% effaced. I register a 10 on the Bishop's Scale which means that inducing me will be successful and that my body is pretty much ready to go.(This is my boy, all cheeks and no neck)

While they put my IV in and take a blood sample, I start to feel faint so they have me lie on my back. Immediately I feel better but to my dismay the room fills with nurses and they have an oxygen mask over my face, the baby's heart rate has dropped from 150 to 70. They roll me over to my side-to allow circulation back into the uterus and everything goes back to normal. But not without a momentary panic.
All hooked up and waiting for the final doctor's orders for Pitocen, Steve leaves to run home and get our bags. We had already packed up everything except for the final items like toiletries and such. At 6:00 pm they start Pitocen and tell me that someone is going to be coming in to break my water. I didn't really want that to happen since I would have preferred to have it break on its own. They came in and broke my water at 6:30 which was pretty much like having a pelvic exam but with a huge gush of water at the end. It didn't hurt and since having random people poke around down there was getting less strange, it wasn't too terrible.(Sometimes we find him making funny poses, Steve saw this one.)

Once they started Pitocen things continued to progress normally for the first few hours. I was having contractions but they were even less painful than some of the braxton hicks I had had. Steve came back with all our stuff just as they upped my dosage on Pitocen. Now I had planned to birth naturally despite having to be induced. I had heard horrible stories of Pitocen being quite the killer especially in combination of breaking your water. Once they upped my dosage, I really started to feel the contractions and they were super intense. I tried hard to relax but was shaking because of the pain. Imagine really bad cramps, that's what it felt like.
I'm not going to lie, it really hurt and I was having a hard time handling it. Then to add another cherry on top, my nurse came in and said that my blood pressure was so high-due to the pain-that I was at risk for seizures. Seizures! So they hooked me up to magnesium to prevent me from having a seizure. It was then that Steve and I decided to go ahead and get an epidural. I knew that as soon as my pain went away my blood pressure would come down.
The anetheologist came in and worked his magic. It wasn't what I had originally planned but nothing about the labor ended up going as planned. I think the main thing was that I felt really prepared. I had read my books, done my research, prepared myself the best I could to make the wisest decisions for myself and my baby. And I feel good about the how experience went since I felt like I was pretty much in control and in "the know" throughout.
So once the epidural kicked in, I was still shaking but I felt relaxed and my blood pressure went back to normal. My left leg was completely out-like I couldn't even move it-and my right leg was the perfect amount of numb and still being able to move it.
Once the epidural was in place, they checked me and I had dilated to a 7. So within an hour and a half I had dilated from a 3 to a 7. No wonder I had been in so much pain. After the epidural I pretty much just slept while Steve watched the Suns game and then before I knew it, I was at a 10. The only weird thing is that once your water breaks with every contraction the baby shifts position in your birth canal and water continues to leak out. Its a great feeling, kind of like you peed your pants but you didn't and since Henry had had a bowel movement inutero, the fluid stunk. Well, I couldn't smell it but Steve said it did.
Once at a 10, we waited for the baby to come down the birth canal instead of pushing him out. At this point my right leg was starting to really feel pain again so using the handy button they gave me, I gave myself another shot of drugs. This is the only thing I regret as my body became numb again it was trickier to push when the time came.
I started pushing and since my contractions were about 3-5 minutes apart I was able to sleep between most of them. I pushed for about 2 1/2 hours but it really didn't feel like that long since I had breaks in between. Once his head came out I gave another small push and remember feeling this giant release and flow. It felt amazing-by then the drugs had worn off enough so I could feel some of what was happening. They placed Henry all red and covered in vernix-white cheesy waterproof coating-on my belly. I remember thinking he had a very red face and a cone head. I didn't see the placenta, Steve did but I pushed that out as well. They took Henry to the side since they had to check him for meconium in the lungs and Steve went to take pictures and be with him.
They stitched me up, I had just one small tear and then they started kneading my stomach to make sure all the placenta had come out and that hurt like a mother. It was the most painful part and would be every time they checked me over the next day. Sometime during that they brought him back over and put him on my chest. His cone head was gone and he was very alert but he had no interest in eating so off to the nursery he went with Steve for his first bath.
Meanwhile my nurses finished cleaning me up and getting me ready to move to recovery.

Since you probably don't want to hear about recovery, I'll end it there.

Overall nothing went as planned but I feel really good about the experience. Not just because we ended up with a healthy mom and baby but because of the preparations I had done beforehand. I think if I hadn't done all my own research and planning, I would have felt like just another procedure and instead I felt like we were able to make good decisions and really be involved in our medical care.
(I love this one, so sweet, my two guys)

They Say the First One is the Hardest...

Confession: In my pre-Henry life I think I had only changed 3 diapers-EVER. I hated babysitting as a youth and there have been no new babies on my side of the family for almost 18 years. In the hospital the wonderful nurses do pretty much everything for you, including help you when you have to go to the bathroom, so of course they are going to take care of all the baby's diapers too. (Well, Steve did a few.)

When we got home, Henry didn't poop for like 8 hours. I wasn't too worried since he was eating well. Then it happened. And by it, I mean IT. The first poopy diaper. Steve opened up the side tabs, lifted off the top and we were hit with the realization that our son had filled his diaper with almost a cup and a half of what looked like molasses in texture and color. Molasses poop. Of course I had read about meconium and newborn poop so I was able to remain calm. In fact, we laughed. We laughed a lot as we used wipe after wipe to clean the little guy's bum. It was a 7 Wipe-r.

And with that, Merry Christmas!

Belly Shots

One of the best pieces of advice I got throughout my pregnancy was to take pictures of myself. No matter how fat or puffy I felt, I would never be able to capture these moments again and I would regret it if I didn't have the photographic evidence of my changing body. Literally someone told me "You're a fool if you think you won't want those pictures. It doesn't mean you have to publish them on facebook for everyone to see, just make sure you have them."

So when my friend Melinda posted on her blog that she was looking for photography practice I jumped on board. When John started dating Melinda years ago I was secretly thrilled for them both. Not only was she super cute and kind but I could tell that she just adored my friend and I love when people are just happy together and have that natural fit that John and Melinda have.

Anyway, Melinda has quite the eye for detail and I knew she would do a great job. She posted a sneak peek on her blog and I am thrilled with the results. Nothing cheesy (thanks for not making me do the heart hands on the belly!) just natural shots that truly make me feel beautiful. There are some with Steve on her blog too, thanks again Steve for coming and being a good sport in the snow and for sustaining low-lying branch induced head injuries.

If you know her, get her to take pictures of you, it was way fun. Thanks again Melinda and John!

Odds and Ends

Well I am officially 34 weeks which means I have about 6 weeks left or about 40 days. Paper chain anyone? I found this dress at DI and I am not going to lie, I used to be anti-tights but they are so comfy. If you are looking for good thick ones that can be worn long or shorter, I recommend the $5 ones from Walmart. I normally don't recommend walmart but these are some of the best for the money. And skinny belts in fun colors? Forever 21, you can't beat $2.50.

I feel like I haven't really gotten that much bigger in the past few weeks but I guess I'm still growing as more and more people keep asking me when I am due. Overall I'm still feeling good.

My work has a mandatory thanksgiving break - like I have to take all of next week off. I, for one, am thrilled. A whole week with no work. Needless to say, I am super excited to relax, finish off some projects and start really celebrating the holidays.

Plans for the holiday include:

Catch up on Modern Family while lounging in bed
Start making Christmas stockings for Steve, me and the baby
Finish Christmas shopping
New curtains for the living room
Mad Men Season 1
Scrapbooking
Belly Shots with Melinda
Hang out with Lori
Bake something ridiculously fattening
Make caramel
Put the finishing touches on my birthday and Christmas wish lists
Stock the freezer with good things to eat
Spend lots of time cuddling with Steve and getting foot massages
Go see Planet 51

Have a great week everyone. I might be around, I might not.
I wouldn't hold your breath if I was you. Love you.

97% Hair

I had my last ultrasound last monday. My doctor does 3 which I think is really cool. Our baby is doing fine and already has a head full of hair. As to the color, who can even begin to guess? Oh and when I say our baby is doing fine I mean he is huge, like the 97%.

You know those couples that over the years start to look similar? Steve and I will never be one of those couples so the thought of what our baby is going to look like really thrills me. His face did look familiar but then was quickly squished behind an open palm.

Also guess what opened 4 blocks from my house today? An In-n-Out Burger. It is everything I can do to not stop there for dinner tonight before our date to the temple. Remembering the madness of IKEA and Krispy Kreme openings in the valley, we're going to give it a few days. I will be dreaming of double doubles though. maybe for thanksgiving dinner?

Firelight

Steve and I don't usually watch SNL because it just isn't that funny anymore but on a fluke we recorded Taylor Swift this Saturday and it was hilarious. Two highlights were the Firelight trailer:

And T.R.A.A.A.P.D. which I'll just link because there is one PG-13 line but its definitely worth a watch. Follow this link here.

Good Job Taylor Swift!

Let the Right One In

Steve and I went and saw Let the Right One In last Friday at the International Cinema. Apart from the obnoxious group date of freshmen who wouldn't shut up and were laughing at all the wrong places, I loved the film. I am not a vampire film lover but this one has such a cool twist that I really enjoyed it.
The film is in Swedish and has beautiful and simple cinematography and styling. And although there is some blood, its not scary or suspenseful. To say it is a thoughtful vampire film sounds odd but that's how I would describe it. Artistic which is refreshing in a sea of Saw movies.

East of Eden

Every time I finish a book I stand in front of our bookshelves and try to find another book to read. Sometimes I stand there for a long time.
Steve and I are DI book junkies. We buy anything that looks good or is by an author we love or want to read more of and since it is DI, we find lots of good books for pennies.

A couple of weeks ago I picked up East of Eden, my first Steinbeck since Cannery Row. Oddly enough, I never had to read the Grapes of Wrath in high school although we do own a copy of it.

Needless to say, I loved it. His style is so succinct. And his characters, I almost couldn't believe how wonderfully everyone was developed. Maybe it has been a long time since I have picked up something that is worth the read but this definitely is. Read it. I mean a woman gives birth to twins and then shoots her husband! Its a good read.

And now I have the film on hold at the library and I am interested to see how the adaptation plays out.

There are no words...

I know that I usually post about Project Runway on Friday but I waited the better part of the morning to steal a screen shot of Heidi's heinous outfit and couldn't find one until this morning.

How are we supposed to take you seriously as a reputable judge when you dress like this? And yes, you can barely see them but the jacket has sequined elbow patches.

But how fabulous was it to see Nick from seasons past? The rest of the show was forgettable as usual, like I am sitting here trying to rack my brain and I cannot remember what the challenge was although I know that Logan finally went home but I feel like it should have been Gordana.

31 Weeks

Nine weeks to go...and I can't see my feet anymore. Well, I can but not if I am standing up straight.

I'm Still Alive...

I'm alive and well and surprisingly silent.

I come home from work full of energy and enthusiasm, make dinner, sit on the couch and don't want to get up. So I don't, I watch sports with Steve cuddled up in a big quilt because we are stubborn and haven't turned the heat on yet.

Maybe you'll hear more from me later. Maybe you won't. I'm not going to stress it.

I Hate Scrapbooking

As a general rule, I don't like scrapbooking. I feel like it is just way too much work to buy all the papers and embellishments and print off the pictures and then drag it out every time you want to do it and there are little paper bits all over your floor. And you have a great vision for a particular page and then you don't have the stuff to pull it off and then you have to buy more stuff and it becomes all about the embellishments instead of the memories.

My friend Julie from work told me about this cool program through Stampin Up, My Digital Studio. Its a digital scrapbooking software that comes stocked with cool papers, stamps and embellishments. So far I have just been trying to get the hang of it but I really like it so far and the program is really easy to use. Suddenly the daunting task of scrapbooking years and years of pictures not to mention the 6000+ Steve and I have taken since we started dating, seems a more doable feat.
So far I have only worked on our honeymoon and I am finding my personal perfectionism to be my greatest downfall. Also I haven't done any journaling on these pages yet but I will.
Anyway, I am excited to finally have a plan on organizing all those memories and getting my personal history underway.
And how fun is it to look back over the years and to realize just how blessed I am by all the wonderful people I have met and all the great places I have been? Its lots of fun.

Project Runway: All Sequined Out

Last night I realized why I am just not loving this season of PR. I don't really love any of the people (characters) like I have in seasons past. I feel like there are sparks of talent but nothing to really blow my mind.

Okay did anyone else get way creeped out by the all close up shots of Nicholas's excitement and glee at seeing and being so near to Bob Mackie? It was unreal. I mean, it was kind of hard to watch. I loved Bob Mackie as a judge though, diamonds on the panties, hilarious.
I am glad that Carol Hannah won because I loved her dress but again I thought Althea's was better and she should have won. I'm just glad Nicholas didn't win for another white dress. And who else is so happy that Shirin is gone? And who didn't love Tim Gunn's comment that her dress looked like a bad sixteen-year-old's prom?
And I know you all probably don't watch Models of the Runway because it is hardly worth the 20 minutes but I totally agree that Katie should smack some sense into Chris. He started out so brilliantly and then has faded into a subpar-Moulin-Rouge-ripoff-mess. Enough said.

The Nursery

Okay, are you ready for 10 pictures of half a tiny room in a two-bedroom basement apartment? Well here is the nursery side of the spare room. Other half has craft desk and computer jammed in but you don't really need to see those right? I was going to put up before shots but quickly became embarrassed when I realized that the room has been a catch all for all our crap for months.

Note: Oval frame is in fact gold and has been artfully photoshopped blue to show what it will look like eventually. And the bookcase is actually green with a black back but will one day be white when it stops raining and Steve can carry it outside for me.

So this is the view while looking in from the door, that is the little computer nook shoved in the back and our stroller and a slice of my serger. Its perfect actually because Steve can be working on homework at the computer and I can see him from the living room couch-so we can still kind of stay connected even though I'm watching So You Think You Can Dance.

Here is a better shot of the glider that I recovered and the curtains I made. The curtains were made from a duvet cover I bought at a yard sale for $2. The oval frame, found at DI, will one day have some cool initial in it once we figure out the baby's name and I think I am going to move it to another wall to make room for the original Pettis I have been promised.

The crib we got from walmart and was a gift from my parents. I love it. I love the white and the dark stain, it matches everything perfectly. I made all the bedding except the crib skirt because I was running out of steam and target had this great one from dwell studio. There are two drawers under the crib that hold all the extra blankets and sheets. Its really nice and convenient for storage. Steve helped me put the crib together-he did a great job!

This is the whole wall with the crib. Note the banner of alphabet cards. I think they were the perfect choice. The shelf is an old utility shelf that we already had and I made a cover for it out of brown fabric I had, cute Anna Marie Horner blue hexagons and the extra fabric from the curtains. Here's a close up of the animals. Steve and I chose the best ones from the pack. Steve's picks were the iguana and jaguar, I love the elephant and zebra. They are hung on some twine I had in the trunk of my car, I braided a few pieces together to make it thicker and used clothespins to hang the pictures. Here is a close up of the utility shelf. I tied the curtains back and inside are baskets for toys and shoes. Also on the top shelf I bought a dowel from the hardware store, had it cut to size, drilled holes in it, painted it blue and hung it to make a closet for hanging his shirts. Storage baskets were bought at kmart on super clearance. There is a tiny wall between the door and the closet where we have his dresser. I bought this dresser years ago at a yard sale, I think I was 16. I remember thinking it was perfect for $15 and loading it into my jeep-I actually remember the house we bought it from. It has since been stripped and stained, it used to be blue. I bought the knobs at IKEA. The germany map I found at DI and I love the colors. It rolls up nice and tidy and ties with a bow. It is one of my favorite DI finds to date. The dresser will double as a changing table and has 3 nice big shelves inside for more storage. Overall I am super happy with the way things have turned out. I also like that the apple green walls suited everything since I know Steve didn't want to repaint the room.
Its such a relief to have everything almost done. I know we still need a few items but I feel like I can relax a little bit now and just enjoy these next few months.

Easy Fall Recipe

Every 4 months or so Steve and I rotate our go-to meal. This fall it seems like we are constantly eating this easy, super quick and cheap meal. In fact, I am having it for lunch today.

First go to the store and buy this cornbread mix. If you cheap out and buy the Jiffy mix I will come hunt you down-seriously, you're not a freshmen in college anymore.

Make as directed and once in the oven, get your chili on.
This is the best chili, so simple and easy and spicy and hearty. It is everything good about chili plus it comes in a packet. I can't believe people eat chili out of a can. (If you're in the valley, you can only buy this at Smith's and sometimes I have Steve go in and buy every packet they have so I don't have to think about it.) Oh and you can substitute northern beans for the white beans because they are often cheaper and no one can tell the difference.

Make the chili with the corn option and use frozen corn because corn out of a can is disgusting.

Your cornbread and chili should be done around the same time and within 40 minutes. Dice up tomatoes, grate cheddar cheese and throw it all in a bowl.

And BAM! a homemade dinner is done and you'll feel that much closer to fall. For dessert eat crisp apples dipped in caramel. This wondrous chili packet was brought to my attention by la.

Thoughts on Pregnancy: Round 3...Fight

I took Friday off (hence no project runway post) to drink my 50 grams of sugar, give blood and get my rogam shot. Hooray for being Rh negative! And since all of that took way less time than I had anticipated, I was able to finish up the nursery except one thing and go see a friend and her cute new baby. I also celebrated officially making it to my third trimester.

(Steve has a night class this week so I was left to my own devices to photograph myself, I think this picture is hilarious, I don't know why. Me at 28 weeks)

Since I haven't really posted anything about being pregnant lately I thought I would take the opportunity now. Don't worry, nothing gross, so keep reading, Natalie. (bytheway, hi Natalie! I hope you're having so much fun in NYC)

So things are still good and honestly this is going to sound weird but I often forget that I am pregnant. Not like I am off doing hazardous things or anything but I don't feel any different than normal.

Albeit, I am starting to get a little more uncomfortable with this growing body and the baby who some days insists on kicking the hell out of my insides. But its not too bad at all.

One weird side effect is that my skin is really dry and itchy and not just my stretching stomach. I think part of this is the onset of winter but I have never had dry skin this bad. It is so bad that I keep a travel sized lotion in my bag and have been known to lather up in the bathroom while running errands. Accomplishing this is quite the feat... but I don't have any stretch marks yet!

Sleeping is fine, I still don't wake up to go to the bathroom and only slightly toss and turn in my 2 feasible positions.

Clothing is great now too and I have a post all set for later this week. I have started this project to motivate myself to actually put thought into my clothing which has worked and I know it sounds lame but if you feel good about how you look, you just feel good.

Another lame self portrait but there I am and note the vanity as side table in the background and way cool red birdcage that I rediscovered buried in the spare room. Guess where it was? Covered in a years worth of dust! haha, sometimes my homemaking skills are seriously lacking...

Also I would like to thank kellymccaleb for posting about my crib bedding on her blog, I truly feel so honored and a teensy bit famous.

Also I have a skirt tutorial coming this week, hint, its the skirt I am wearing in the pictures. And I have some other stuff up my blogging sleeves like the nursery and my solution to hating scrapbooking. Stay Tuned!

Tutorial: Bleached Dress

Now why would I post a tutorial about laundry? Why yes, I was a professional laundress all through college and can mangle with the best of them but this is totally different and definitely more artistic.

I bought this dress from Express years ago, it was navy blue and relatively modest, in fact my roommate had the same one. Well as it is years old, it was starting to show some signs of fading but it still fits and is super comfy over my expanding body. I decided to bleach it, hence the tutorial.
1. Select item of clothing to bleach. A word to the wise, only do this on something you don't care if it doesn't turn out, like it was already in your Goodwill pile. Also I think knits and 100% cottons might work best.
2. Change into crummy clothes, you are working with bleach, this isn't the time to be wearing your favorite jeans.
3. Gather supplies: bleach, water, bucket and article of clothing. Also you'll need something to stir everything with and its probably a good idea to get gloves since my hands stuck for days afterwards.
4. Do not put bleach directly on fabric! Bleach weakens fibers (if you've ever bleached your hair, you know what I am talking about) so it needs to be diluted. Fill bucket with enough water for clothing to move around freely. This is important. If the bucket is too small then you'll get a weird tie-dyed look. Add bleach and mix thoroughly with water. I don't have a recipe, I just kind of guessed but I would say that it is about 1 cup bleach to every gallon of water.
5. Add clothing, make sure it is totally submerged and then promptly move bucket outside or you will slowly asphyxiate you, your husband and your unborn baby.
6. Check bucket every 30 minutes or so until desired color is reached. To go from navy to pink it took the better part of a saturday. The water will also start to turn a funky orange color as the bleach breaks down the dyes in your clothes.
7. Rinse clothing in sink and machine wash. I had to wash my dress about 3 times before it no longer smelled. If you're using the washing machine, wash the item by itself first just to get all the extra bleach out.

And you just made yourself a new dress (shirt, skirt) and it cost you nothing.

Motivated and Uplifted

We had a great weekend, watching conference, putting up cribs and taking a load of junk to DI.

Okay so not cribs but A crib, yes! and it is super cute. I am loving the way the nursery/spare room is turning out. (Thanks again Steve for all your help in assembling and shuffling things around and for constantly responding to my ridiculous slew of questions about whether things look good or not.) I can't wait to put up pictures but I am going to hold off until things are a little more finished looking. Empty walls just feel so sad and abandoned to me. And the crafty things are back in full force, after a week of taking it easy, I have sewn and stuffed and machine quilted to my heart's content. Things are really starting to come together and I am getting even more and more excited for the baby to come out. I know that some mothers love their child from conception but I haven't been one of those women. Not like I was worried about loving my child but there is something about preparing that is helping me feel connected to this little person. Nesting, it works.

In the spirit of starting traditions, Steve and I made doughnuts on Sunday morning. Steve was a good sport and did all the cinnamon and sugaring. Because I knew we'd be busy and tired from moving furniture around, I used this easy recipe from Paula Deen. Next time, we'll be making dough from scratch. These were actually pretty good and super simple. Scary simple. Like, it won't be 6 months before we make them again.

Conference was inspiring and uplifting. I love that I feel all motivated to do good and be better right now. I'm sure it will pass but I love that high feeling. My favorite talk was from Elder Bednar about being consistent as a family.

Oh and in case you were wondering, I did find room for my vanity in the living room (it is now a side table) and I am adjusting to getting ready, standing up in the bathroom. I think besides vacations it has been over 7 years since I have had to do this.

Project Runway: Giving me the Blues

So I was way disappointed in Project Runway last night. I hate commerical, mass produced challenges. I know that promotes them being sellable but it really makes for boring tv, the kind you brush your teeth through and kind of wish you were in bed instead of watching.

The only tolerable outfit was this one by Irina which I would actually wear but everything else was boring and way too ruffled up. I'm happy that Louise is gone and I am even happier that their threat of double elimination ended up being empty.

And as sad as it is to see the designers cry (Chris) he just looked like an idiot. I mean, it wasn't even a good cry like the meltdowns of Ricky's from the old days.

And, the lady from INC looked sick in her too tight blazer (!) and its really her fault that Chris and Epperson were in the bottom because she was the one who originally liked their designs. So isn't she saying that she has no clue what a woman today would wear?

I did like Michael Kors being back last night and appreciated his tattered loofah comment.

Peace out, have a good weekend.

Realizations

Realization #1.
This morning my car windshield was frozen. Yes, I went outside, started the car and then came back inside to take this picture. The best part about the baby being born in January is that the 3 worst months for scraping your car will be during my maternity leave. I cannot tell you how many mornings in the past I have secretly wished I was a stay at home mom where I could avoid scraping my car every morning.

Realization #2
None of my jackets fit around my belly. For now I am supplementing with scarves but I might want to look into getting something warmer to wear than a cardigan. Which is excellent news because I love new jackets!

Realization #3
My work chair sucks and its attributing to all my lower back pain and discomfort. And since my work place won't buy me a better one without a doctor's note, I took the initiative and found this beauty off ksl classifieds. Thanks Denny!

Realization #4

My new work chair is so comfortable I might either slip into an afternoon nap or relaxation- induced coma.

Its that time of year again

Tomorrow is October and today I am wearing boots!

As you can see the baking itch got the better of me and I am knee deep in pumpkin-y goodness and spicy aromas. Nothing marks the start of fall celebrations quite like a batch of pumpkin bread. darbie, I'm thinking of you. Not only because I know you look forward to it as much as I do but because of you this recipe feeds hundreds of missionaries at the MTC. I love the idea of it being made in huge vats, comforting young men who are off on a sometimes lonely and hard journey.
This is also the time of year to start thinking about Halloween and costumes. My mom was the champion costume maker. Everything was hand made and we had to have our options locked in mid-September so she could sew away. And these weren't lame-o ghost costumes, they were the real deal. Pro sports uniforms with hand stitched lettering, elegant princess gowns, Rambo with glow in the dark ammo belt. I remember the first costume I insisted on making for myself, I was a firecracker. I made a basic shift dress out of red felt and decorated it with glitter and made an explosion of red, white and blue tinsel headband. I think I wore it over a white turtleneck.

So what are the baby and I going to be this year? Pregnant bride? Thats always funny...

The Freak of the Night

6:00 eat dinner with Steve while watching the last half of the Amazing Race. How embarassing for that couple to be eliminated in the first 15 minutes of the race.

6:49 start sewing a t-shirt for the baby. I have put off starting to make clothes for him because 1) it scared me and 2) finding suitable fabrics has been a challenge. But I started out simple with a t-shirt pattern and an old shirt of Steve's he was going to give to DI

6:55 frustratedly stare at collar, there is no way this is going to work. Butterick is insane to think this is going to fit on the shirt!

6:58 angrily pick out failed attempt at attaching collar band to shirt

7:00 cut a new collar band, bigger this time, I'll show Butterick who is boss, talk out loud to myself that "I can do it, I can do this, I can make a simple t-shirt"

7:02 angrily throw shirt on table and vow this just isn't going to work, reluctantly start picking out failed attempt #2

7:05 doorbell rings and girls from ward come over to borrow electric sander and ask for advice about refinishing a changing table

7:08 visiting teacher stops by to drop off homemade strawberry jam and a note

7:10 head over to girl's apartment to assess the changing table

7:35 come home and pick up shirt where I left off. I am sweating since girl's apartment was way hot, recut another collar band and again fail to make it work

7:42 this time I am quiting, I put all sewing supplies in a heap and vow, this time I really mean it, I am DONE

7:45 read visiting teacher's note

excerpt to follow:
Barbara Thompson, second counselor in the Relief Society general presidency: “Sisters, now more than ever, we need women to step up and be strong. We need women who declare the truth with strength, faith, and boldness. We need women to set an example of righteousness. We need women to be ‘anxiously engaged in a good cause.’ We need to live so that our lives bear witness that we love our Heavenly Father and the Savior Jesus Christ and that we will do what They have asked us to do”
Visiting Teacher:
"This quote made me think of all the women that are seen as icons or role models today (kind of scary!) Its so true - we need real examples; women willing to defend their beliefs and stand for what is right rather than what is popular. The last line in this quote made me think of you, a perfect example of someone who is living to bear witness that you love your Heavenly Father and are willing to do what he has asked us to do: raise one of his precious children in the gospel. It is the most amazing power that He has given us. I believe it is His way of letting us know that He loves and trusts us and He knows the amazing things we are capable of"

7:48 tears of gratitude streaming down face onto counter, this is exactly what I needed to hear and suddenly I am happy not because my visiting teacher said such kind things but because I was given a glimpse of the bigger picture, a glimpse I very rarely take the time to look at

7:50 Steve comes over and sees me crying and all I can say is that I am not upset but I am happy. I am sure he thinks I am the biggest freak of the night, in fact this is one of the rare nights I have been a freakish pregnant woman.

8:00-8:30 work on shirt with deep calm breaths, then I realize that I am supposed to be making a newborn shirt. It seems kind of big? After all that work, this is my half done shirt on the left and a 12 month shirt on the right. Newborn? Yeah right. I don't know what kind of newborns butterick is encountering (indonesian?) but I don't want to have anything to do with them.

8:30 laugh with Steve over gross oversizement of said shirt

8:45 abandon shirt for night (maybe forever?) and take week 26 picture

Dear Baby

If you could stop ramming your head into my cervix that would be great. In return, I promise to start feeding you more fruits and vegetables and less Taco Bell.

love you

Baby Crafting: Bedding

I actually finished this weeks ago but have been saving the post for a time when I feel like I should be blogging but have either nothing new to share or am too lazy to hook up the camera.

I finally finished the baby's bedding and I love, love, love it. The colors are bright and cheerful and pretty without being girly. I even made a bumper but am waiting to fit it to the crib that is currently sitting in a box between our kitchen and living room.

So one more project down, many many more to come including some way cute curtains I am super excited about and finally putting the nursery together this weekend while we listen to General Conference. And I might have figured out a way to squeeze in my vanity which I was going to selflessly sell to make room for the baby, cross your fingers for me.
Is anyone else already really excited for conference? I don't know why but this year I have been heartily anticipating it. And in the quest to start some traditions of our own, I have decided that every conference weekend Steve and I are going to make and (hopefully) enjoy homemade donuts. Maybe that's why I'm excited...

Bringing out the Emotions

If you thought this was going to be another post about pregnancy, well you're wrong. Last night Steve and I, both, succumbed to so pretty emotional statements while watching the latest episode of Project Runway. Think more anger and bewilderment then tears...

First of all, I would like to say that I have been annoyed at the constant absence of Michael Kors and Nina Garcia (hola). I never thought I would miss them but I do, bring back our judges and stop with these boring fill ins.
The challenge was to create a costume for a character from a movie genre. Most people did okay but I just feel like they keep missing the mark when it comes to selecting the winners.

Nicholas won with his evil ice queen and while I thought Celine carried it off well with her dark hair, I just didn't think it was as good as some of the others.
I loved this vampire bride-to-be victorian thing that Christopher did. Is it just me or is Christopher really good? I mean, surprisingly good.
Steve and I also really loved this Annie-get-your-gun western creation of Epperson's, who we think has been sadly under rated the whole show so far. Speaking of being underrated, I think Logan has also been overlooked a lot too except by the models who are all obsessed with him.
And I know his sea creature, sci-fi thing was awful, I didn't think that Ra'mon should have been kicked off. I'm still mad about it. It should have been Louise who was boring and predictable.
Anyway have a great weekend and enough ranting from me...back to work.

Pan's Labyrinth

The BYU International Cinema is showing Pan's Labyrinth this week. This film is beautiful, I highly recommend it. And if you're lucky enough to have a hot spanish master's student as your date, he can explain all the Spanish History allegories to you.
Go see it for free! They do edit for content (which is good because there are brutal bits) but I have always been pleasantly surprised at how well they edit.
They are also showing Spirit of the Beehive which Steve highly recommends but I haven't seen yet.
